Traditional Icelandic Food Tasting Tour

About this experience

Your Friend in Reykjavik is a local company that runs walking, food and beer tours from Ingolfstorg, the square at the west end of Austurstraeti. This is its classic food tour, and with 1,138 reviews it's the second most reviewed food walk on this site after the Reykjavik Food Walk. The listing promises "everything from lamb soup to fermented shark", a stop at "the city's oldest restaurant" and the famous hot dog stand.

The itinerary lists six stops with their times: Ingolfstorg (5 minutes), Seabaron (25), Kolaportid market (30), Baejarins Beztu Pylsur (15), Icelandic Street Food (40) and Taste of Iceland (10). It ends back where it started. Guests mention lamb soup, the hot dog, plokkfiskur (mashed fish) and chocolate liquorice. Water at every stop and alcoholic drinks are included, which the Food Walk does not list.

Not every guest is won over. One July 2026 reviewer found the portions small for the price, and another reviewer counted 2 to 3 miles of walking with a small hill. The listing says the tour runs in all weather and is not wheelchair accessible, though strollers are fine.

  • Six named stops, including Kolaportid flea market and the hot dog stand
  • Lamb soup, plokkfiskur and a taste of fermented shark
  • Water and alcoholic drinks included
  • Groups of 12 at most
  • Ends where it starts, on Ingolfstorg square

★★★★★

This was a great experience to get a taste of some Icelandic dishes and delicacies. [...] My wife and I enjoyed the lamb soup and the local hot dog. My favorite was the mashed fish.

The tour is an easy walking pace, and the food stops are paced out nicely so that it doesn’t feel like one after another after another.

Good food, and nice variety. I enjoyed the small party. Informative guide. I left full and did not need another meal.
