Your Friend in Reykjavik · Ingolfstorg, old town

A private food tour of Reykjavik

The same local company as the traditional tasting tour, but with a guide for your group alone, dinner and drinks included, and pickup from downtown hotels. Pick it for a family, a birthday or anyone who wants to set the pace.

Private Food Walking & Tasting Tour

About this experience

This is the private version of Your Friend in Reykjavik's food tour. Only your group takes part, and the operator offers pickup from hotels within its downtown radius. If you stay further out, you meet the guide outside Hlollabatar on Ingolfstorg square. The tour runs for about three hours and ends back at the meeting point.

Dinner and alcoholic drinks are included. The itinerary lists five stops, among them Baejarins Beztu Pylsur (the hot dog stand) and Kolaportid market. The listing mentions fermented shark and smoked puffin, and guests write about smoked lamb tartare, crowberry jam and the hot dog. Puffin is not everyday Icelandic food, so tell the guide if you'd rather skip it; our Icelandic food guide explains why.

The price, from $236 per person, is the highest on this site. For a couple that's about $90 a head more than the Food Walk. For a family it buys a guide who adjusts to the kids: one guest wrote that the guide "answered all the random questions the kids had".

  • A guide for your group alone
  • Dinner and alcoholic drinks included
  • Pickup from downtown hotels
  • Children 5 to 12 at a lower price
  • Five stops, including the hot dog stand and Kolaportid market

The tastings covered a broad range, from the fermented shark that I will never forget to the Icelandic hot dog that turned out to be my favorite thing all day. Every restaurant was expecting us and had things ready [...]

We had a very nice variety of traditional Icelandic foods with our guide, Kristin. She would tell us some history of the food and Iceland as we tried each one.

Bo made sure the various venues knew it was my wife’s birthday making the tour that much more special. We would definitely recommend the private tour with Bo.

Tips before you book

  • Ask for pickup when you book and check your hotel is inside the downtown radius.
  • Say if you want to skip puffin or any other dish. It's your tour.
  • Children 5 to 12 pay about $108; infants are a separate band on the listing.
  • Wheelchair users: ask before booking. The operator's beer tour says private groups get arrangements made.
  • Kolaportid market is open on Saturdays and Sundays only, according to its own site. Pick a weekend if you want to see it.
